3DS for Issuers

What is 3D Secure protection?

3-D Secure is a protocol designed to be an additional security layer for online credit and debit card transactions. The name refers to the "three domains" which interact using the protocol: the merchant/acquirer domain, the issuer domain, and the interoperability domain.

Generally, 3DS adds an extra layer of protection to online shopping experience. With 3DS enabled, cardholders have 2-step authentication on every online purchase — so payments will be authorized.

In the 3-D Secure protocol, the ACS (access control server) is on the card issuer side. Currently, most card issuers outsource ACS to a third party. Commonly, the buyer's web browser shows the domain name of the ACS provider.

How 3D Secure works?

The 3D Secure flow is as following

  1. Cardholder will provide credit / debit card details.
  2. Merchant connects with a directory server belonging to the card Issuer to determine card enrollment into 3DS.
  3. The 3D Secure authentication page will be opened, where you can verify your identity with the bank chosen authentication methods.
  4. Authentication result goes to the Merchant, who sends then transaction information to the acquiring bank.
  5. Acquiring bank will start usual authorization flow.
